Bad habits: just like opinions, and well, you know, we’ve all got them! Personally, I gnaw relentlessly on my fingernails. While some bad habits aren’t necessarily life-threatening, there are some that can definitely have adverse effects on your health and happiness. Instead of letting those bad habits take over, replace them with good habits instead! For me, my goal in 2019 is to replace my bad nail-biting habit with a good habit one, instead! What about you? Which one of your bad habits are you thinking of replacing?
Replace Watching Television With Outdoor Fun
If you feel like watching television or playing video games is taking over your life, it’s time to sit and take stock of this bad habit. If you’re tired of the TV, make it a goal to replace 10+ hours of TV time with time spent outdoors this week, instead. You can go for a run, hit the slopes, or take the dog for a walk. It doesn’t matter how you spend your time, just make sure it’s outdoors. I guarantee you won’t even miss the television!
Stop Overspending With a Daily Budget
I used to have the worst problem with overspending and it would create unnecessary stressors throughout my life. I was so unhappy! Those quick $200 Target trips can really sneak up on you. Instead of wondering where your money went at the end of the month, replace your spending habit with that of keeping track of a daily budget. Calculate your daily expenses versus income and come up with a daily, weekly, and monthly budget goal. There’s also nothing wrong with rewarding yourself for a well-kept budget once this good habit sinks in!
Replace Nail Biting With Chewing Gum
I’m two weeks into my mission to stop nail biting and chewing gum has been the best thing for me! Not only is biting your nails extremely unsanitary but it’s bad for your dental health, too. Though, none of these things seem to dissuade me..sigh. I read that chewing gum and keeping a busy mouth is a great way to bust a nail-biting habit. It’s worked wonderfully for me so far!
Replace Excessive Drinking With Something Personal
Excessive alcohol consumption is bad for any aspect of your mental and physical health. If you suffer from excessive drinking, it’s important to talk to someone to develop an understanding of why you drink. Once you determine the “why” of this habit, you can replace it with something healthy like meditation, reading, or yoga. Your liver will thank you!
Replace Midnight Snacking With Dinner Side Salads
I totally understand the appeal of a late night snack and I’ve been known to indulge in my fair share but no matter how you slice it, eating past eight isn’t great for your body. To curb cravings at bedtime, create the habit of eating a filling side-salad with dinner. Always incorporate a protein, if you can! The added nutrients (without the extra calories) will keep you full and away from the fridge at midnight! Midnight snacking is one of those bad habits that has to go!
